This course is designed to help students who have completed build up their Classical Chinese reading skills before taking major reading classes. It mainly focuses on relatively plain and short works from Chinese prose anthologies such as True Treasuries of Classical Chinese Literary Works and Selected Prose of Eight Great Masters of Tang and Song Dynasties, which are frequently asked in Teacher Appointment Test, as well as Sino-Korean prose anthologies such as Anthology of Korean Literature and Selected Works of Korean Prose(Minumsa). We teach how to interpret Classical Chinese sentences, and also teach basic and intermediate level Classical Chinese grammar.

As the purpose to understand systematically the historic development process of the Chinese literature in Korea, the subject targets from the ancient times to the end of the Koryo Dynasty. The study bases on the leading writers and their works starting from Choi Chi-won of the Silla Dynasty times to the end of the Koryo Dynasty. At the same time, by reading with the comments to inspire the ability of deciphering the original text, the subject also intend to organizationally understand the Chinese literature before the Joseon Dynasty times. Meanwhile, by studying the correlation of Chinese literature histories between China and Korea, the universality and distinctiveness of the Korean Chinese literature would be understood together.

The purpose is to understand the Chinese novel in general, by understanding the fundamental concept of the eastern novel which developed as the different pattern with the western novel and the study on the development phase of the novel history.
