The Department of Classical Chinese Education was established in 1973 to produce teachers who can provide instruction in the subject in middle and high school, and also to cultivate expert scholars for the study and development of traditions. Our department is prominant in its production of individuals who have great knowledge of Classical Chinese as well as a contemporary understanding of the subject, that can contribute to the humanistic virtues in Koreanology or Oriental Studies, areas which are garnering increased interest due to the rapid development of the region.
The goal of this department is to cultivate creative talent based on the spirit of 法古創新 (emulating tradition but adaptable, and creating a new way but still keeping one’s roots).
Firstly, it aims to train Classical Chinese teachers with professional and academic abilities who earn respect.
Secondly, it aims to cultivate talented experts with sufficient knowledge and modern perspectives of classical culture, who can reinvigorate Classical Chinese and traditional culture in modern ways through reinterpretation.
Thirdly, it aims to foster talented students for the quest and practice of learning, based on expert knowledge of 文史哲 (literature, history, and philosophy), which is the essence of oriental culture.
Department in Detail
1. Facilities
The Department of Classical Chinese Education provides a calligraphy room (Hoam Buidling, 50522) so students can practice their skills. Students can rent seminar rooms in the Hoam Building or study at reading rooms for students preparing for the teachers’ examinations. We also support students’ studies in the Teacher Appointment Examination through study groups.
2. Exchanges and Partnerships
Students in this department can apply for foreign exchange programs in their sophomore and junior years. Besides this, there are programs available for students to experience East Asian countries during vacation.
Also, we are in partnership with more than 30 elementary, middle and high schools. Students in the college of education can apply for teaching practices at international schools in Vietnam (Hanoi) and China (Beijing), too. Students can practice their teaching skills at those schools for 4 weeks through <Student Teaching in Practice>.
Why choose us?
Graduates of this department will work as teachers in middle or high schools, but some may continue their studies advancing onto Master's and Doctorate courses in graduate school. Of those who continue their studies, a considerable number are playing active parts as professors at colleges, or take on roles as literary writers and art experts. Moreover, some have advanced to careers in the culture industry, journalism, and other professional occupations. As the first Classical Chinese Education Department established in Korea, our department, with its excellent faculty, is pioneering a new frontier of Koreanology.
Finally, as the very first Classical Chinese Education department in Korea, we have a long tradition of education and a powerful alumni network. For students who aim to continue their studies in the field of Classical Chinese and East Asian Studies as graduate and Ph.D. students, the Department of Classical Chinese Education would be a good stepping stone.
